I teach people about web usability and online source credibility.

Check the university library website pages for great tips, like at Johns Hopkins, MIT, Stanford Persuasive Technology Lab, U of California, etc. for guidelines on how to assess the credibility of online information.

As far as defending your online reputation, my primary reaction is to write blog posts on any topic of defamation or slander that opposes me, then link to that post on Pownce, Jaiku, Twitter, Facebook, even do a YouTube video on the issue.

Why?

Because these microblogging and Web 2.0 type tools get incredible Google juice for SERPs, and when your name is typed into a search engine, those posts and links will likely appear at top of the results page.

If people believe some sleazy troll like Amanda Chapel/Strumpette, who attacks and harrasses any Cluetrain web professionals and marketers, that's their idiocy.

Don't worry about dummies. Just practice blogocombat every chance that arises, and you'll get better at ignoring, debating, and even bashing if necessary!

Another good method is to not defend or attack, but deconstruct the offenses, explain how trolls and abusive flamers operate.

See: The Matrix Online Guide to Internet Trolls.

I'm sure you'll come up with more.

Stephanie - Thanks, this is a very timely and pertinent topic. Not sure if you saw the article in today's NY Times. Evolutionary biologists in Germany and Austria conducted a study that showed that people tend to listen to gossip and that it can affect their behavior even when it appears to contradict what they can observe. So, managing your reputation is clearly extremely important and should be done proactively - or someone else might manage it for you.
