Books
Steal These Ideas! by Steve Cone delivers hundreds of great insights on all facets of marketing and advertising. Every marketer will find something to enjoy and use in this book.
A fascinating look at the explosion of “the new luxury” in the US, Trading Up: Why Consumers Want New Luxury Goods - and How Companies Create Them provides fun and useful case studies of consumers “trading up” to brands that successfully position themselves as emotionally important.
So pre-Internet that I have yet to find a cover image, Philadelphia Gentlemen: The Making of a National Upper Class by E. Digby Baltzell is the mack-daddy of all books about the rise of the rich in the United States. The “new luxury” didn’t just happen: its underpinnings date back to the eighteenth century. Full disclosure: E. Digby Baltzell was one of those blow-your-mind, he-must-be-200-years-old college professors (in my case, at the University of Pennsylvania) you never forget.
Movies

That’d be 3 Tim Roberts, 2 Christoper Guests and 2 Warren Beattys… so far.
